Two-thirds
of the body's iodine is in the thyroid gland. Iodine helps with
dieting by burning excess fat and giving more energy. Iodine
promotes proper growth, especially of hair, nails, skin, and
teeth. Iodine improves mental alacrity and may help prevent mental
retardation in children. Since the thyroid gland controls
metabolism, and iodine influences the thyroid, and undersupply of
this mineral can result in slow mental reaction, weight gain, and
lack of energy. Deficiency can also cause goiter and
hypothyroidism. Recently, an iodine deficiency has been linked to
breast cancer. Food Sources: Vegetables grown in iodine-rich soil
(which excludes the Midwest), onions, all seafood, sea salt, dulse,
white deep-water fish, lima beans, sesame seeds, soybeans, summer
squash, green leafy vegetables, cucumbers.. Herbal Sources: Dulse,
garlic, irish moss, kelp, sarsaparilla Supplementation: Available
in multimineral and high-potency vitamin supplements in doses of
0.15 mg. natural kelp is a good source of supplemental iodine.
Using iodized table salt or sea salt also insures an adequate
amount of iodine in the diet.
